Chilmington Green was of importance during the Second World War, being home to an airfield commonly known as RAF Ashford. The airfield is now gone, however standing structures dating to this period, such as pillboxes, can be found throughout the surrounding landscape. To tell the story of Chilmington in Wartime, we will bring together as much information about the airfield and any standing structures as possible, with documentary sources and oral histories from veterans and residents, who witnessed events first hand. We will also research crash sites around the study area and try to tell the stories of the airmen involved, their missions and their lives inside and outside of the air force.
